Resumen: 

The physical world provides lots of ways to reveal the secrets of mathematics through illustration; this also creates bridges where mathematical concepts can be used to create interesting art and structures. In particular, modern tools, especially for digital manufacturing, provide ways to bring mathematics into the world in creative and illuminating ways. In this talk I will discuss my work creating mathematical illustrations, models of algebraic surfaces and sculptures and toys informed by mathematical ideas.


Semblanza: 

Edmund Harriss is an Assistant Professor in Mathematics and Art at the University of Arkansas. His work looks for underdeveloped applications of pure mathematics, especially geometry, and the synergies that can come when worlds of mathematical ideas are connected to physical reality, especially through CNC and robot manufacturing. This requires a subtle understanding of the mathematical ideas and the tools involved. For example, a recent sculp- ture used the Bishop (or zero torsion) frame to create curved beams from developable metal surfaces. This technique is now being used by engineers to create optimised concrete beams. He has experience with many different manufacturing technquies in wood, metal and stone.
