Symmetrization procedures which are perimeter non-increasing have been important tools in Analysis, the Calculus of Variations, and the study of PDEs for the last 140 years.  The importance of this property leads to the following basic question: for what measures does there exist a symmetrization procedure which has this property?
The first half of the talk will focus on motivation, giving a (very incomplete) historical overview of symmetrization procedures and their applications.  The second half of the talk will focus on answers and partial answers to this basic question, including recent work (joint with Kuan-Ting Yeh of Purdue).  If time permits, we shall end with a discussion of some related open problems.
