Following the seminal work of Graham and Zworski, one can define conformally covariant
elliptic operators on compact manifolds of fractional order. This leads to a new notion of curvature.
One can ask then the question of prescribing this curvature on compact smooth manifolds and this is
what I will adress in the talk. Before going into this problem, I will recall what we know about the
standard Yamabe problem, now completely solved, and remind the audience the techniques on how
to solve it. I will mention several open problems.
