Various curve complexes have been used for studying the mapping class group and 3-manifolds. Originally this project arose out of looking for a curve complex for studying the Torelli group, i.e. the subgroup of the mapping class group that acts trivially on homology. This context is very different from the usual curve complex arguments, and some of these differences will be explained in this talk. The relationship between the geometry of the complex defined and commutator lengths of surface groups will be explained.
