Let Mₙ := CP² # n (-CP)² for 0 ≤ n ≤ 8 be the underlying smooth manifold of a degree (9-n) del Pezzo surface. The (topological) mapping class group of Mₙ is the group Mod(Mₙ) of isotopy classes of homeomorphisms of Mₙ. In this talk, I will give a classification of all elements of order 2 in Mod(Mₙ) and deduce a positive solution to the Nielsen realization problem for order-2 subgroups of Mod(Mₙ). I will also discuss a connection to the Nielsen realization problem for a certain maximal torsion-free, abelian subgroup of Mod(Mₙ).
