In joint work with Joel Hass, we define a combinatorial energy for maps from surfaces to manifolds. There are existence and uniqueness results for combinatorial harmonic maps very similar to those obtained using the more usual energy, but much simpler to prove. These results are well suited to applications in low dimensional topology. I will discuss our results and some of these applications.
